My Family Excluded Me From My Son’s Anniversary Dinner—Then Handed Me the Bill

The paper tore with a dry, sharp sound.

For a moment, nobody at the table moved.

Small pieces of white paper drifted onto the white tablecloth, landing between empty steak plates, half-finished glasses of wine, and crumbs from a dessert that I had not been invited to eat.

“Everything still on for six-thirty?”

“Of course,” she replied.
