After raising three sons, my husband finally placed a baby girl in my arms—but my happiness disappeared when the doctor asked to speak with me privately.
After our third boy was born, I put away the little pink blanket I had purchased years before.
I loved my sons more than anything.
Still, my husband David knew I had always hoped that someday I would have a daughter.
Then, seventeen years later, my phone rang at 6:20 in the morning.
David was calling from the hospital.
“Come here as soon as you can. And don’t bring the boys.”
When I got there, he was waiting outside the maternity ward.
In his arms was a newborn baby girl.
I stopped in my tracks.
“David… whose baby is she?”
Tears filled his eyes.
“Ours.”
He gently handed her to me.
She had dark hair, tiny little fingers, and the most stunning gray eyes I had ever seen.
I immediately began to cry.
David leaned over and kissed my forehead.
“Her name is Grace.”
I stood there completely confused.
Before I could ask him what was going on, a doctor walked over to us.
“Mrs. Carter? I need to speak with you privately.”
David’s body suddenly became tense.
“There’s no reason for that.”
The doctor didn’t respond to him.
He simply led me into his office and shut the door behind us.
“Did your husband explain to you how Grace came to be here?”
“No.”
The doctor’s expression became serious.
He pushed a folder across the desk toward me.
Inside was a DNA test.
I immediately saw David’s name.
Probability of paternity: 0%.
I stared at the doctor in disbelief.
“Then why would he tell me she’s our daughter?”
The doctor turned the report over.
There was another result underneath.
This time, my name was printed on it.
Probability of biological relationship: 99.8%.
My hands suddenly went completely numb.
“That can’t be possible. I’m fifty-four.”
“I understand.”
“Then who is her mother?”
The doctor hesitated.
Before he could say another word, someone suddenly began pounding hard against the office door.
