A Dying Man Asked Me to Pretend I Was His Daughter — Then His Nurse Gave Me an Envelope

I never expected a short visit to the hospital to introduce me to someone who would become such an important part of my life.

I had gone there to visit my mother, who was recovering from a health problem and expected to remain in the hospital for several days. My routine was simple. I would arrive in the afternoon, spend time with her, help with anything she needed, and then return home.

There was another patient staying in a room across the hallway.

His name was Thomas.

I noticed him because he always seemed to be alone.

While other hospital rooms occasionally had family members, friends, or visitors coming and going, Thomas’s room was usually quiet. There were no large bouquets of flowers beside his bed and no regular stream of visitors.

Most of the time, I could hear the television playing softly inside his room.

At first, I didn’t think much about it.

Hospitals are full of people dealing with difficult circumstances, and I knew that I shouldn’t make assumptions about anyone simply because they didn’t have visitors.

But after seeing Thomas several times, I began to notice how isolated he appeared.

Then one small incident changed everything.

The Moment We First Spoke

One afternoon, I was walking down the hallway toward my mother’s room when I heard something fall.

I looked toward Thomas’s room and saw a plastic cup lying on the floor.

Thomas had apparently knocked it from the small table beside his bed.

He tried to reach it himself, but he was clearly struggling.

I stopped in the doorway.

“Do you need some help?”

He looked up and gave me a small smile.

“Yes, please.”

I walked inside, picked up the cup, and placed it safely on the table.

It took less than a minute.

I didn’t think the moment was particularly important.

But before I left, Thomas thanked me.

Then, almost shyly, he raised his hand.

I waved back.

The next day, when I walked past his room, he waved again.

I smiled and waved back.

That became our little routine.

A Simple Friendship Begins

Eventually, our silent hallway greetings turned into short conversations.

I’d stop at the doorway and ask how he was feeling.

Sometimes he would tell me about something he’d watched on television.

Other times we’d talk about the weather, the hospital food, or something funny that had happened during the day.

The conversations weren’t particularly deep.

In fact, most of them were completely ordinary.

But ordinary conversations can mean a lot when someone has spent a long time without company.

I started staying for a few extra minutes.

When I visited my mother, I would sometimes bring a small dessert or a piece of fruit.

One afternoon, I brought an extra snack and offered it to Thomas.

“You don’t have to do that,” he said.

“I know,” I replied. “I wanted to.”

He smiled.

From then on, bringing him something small became part of my routine.

I wasn’t trying to do anything extraordinary.

I simply didn’t want him to feel forgotten.

What I Eventually Learned About Thomas

Over time, I learned that Thomas was seriously ill.

He had advanced cancer and was extremely weak.

His condition had progressed to the point where he spent most of his time in bed.

Despite everything he was facing, he rarely complained to me.

He seemed more interested in talking about everyday things.

He liked certain movies.

He enjoyed particular foods.

He had places he had always wanted to visit.

Sometimes we would talk about traveling.

I’d mention places I had been or wanted to see, and he would tell me about places he remembered from earlier in his life.

Our conversations were simple, but they gave us something to look forward to.

Whenever I came to the hospital, I knew that after visiting my mother, I’d probably spend another twenty or thirty minutes with Thomas.

I never considered it a burden.

It became something I genuinely wanted to do.

Then He Made an Unexpected Request

One afternoon, everything changed.

Thomas was sitting up in bed when I entered his room.

He looked different that day.

There was something serious in his expression.

I sat beside him and asked how he was doing.

He didn’t answer immediately.
