My Four-Year-Old Pointed at My Boss’s Ear and Said, “Daddy Is There”

During a company celebration, my four-year-old daughter suddenly pointed toward my employer’s ear and said something that stopped me in my tracks.

“Daddy is there.”

I knew exactly what she meant.

And that was impossible.

My husband, Mike, had been gone for a year.

He had died after a long battle with cancer, leaving me to raise our daughter, Mia, on my own.

So when Mia pointed at my boss and insisted that her father was somehow there, I didn’t know whether to correct her, comfort her, or simply ignore what she had said.

But then she repeated herself.

And this time, she added something that made the moment much harder to dismiss.

“We have to save him.”

I had no idea what she thought she was seeing.

I only knew that whatever had caught her attention was somewhere near Harold’s ear.

And when I eventually looked closely myself, I understood why she had been so certain.

A Difficult Year

Mike had been one of the most important people in my life.

We had built our home together, made plans for the future, and eventually welcomed Mia into our lives.

She was only three when Mike became seriously ill.

Cancer changed everything.

There were hospital visits, difficult conversations, long nights, and days when the future felt impossible to imagine.

When Mike died, Mia was four.

She was too young to fully understand what had happened.

She knew Daddy wasn’t coming home.

She knew I was sad.

But she couldn’t understand why.

I struggled too.

There were mornings when getting out of bed felt like an accomplishment.

There were evenings when the house seemed impossibly quiet.

Still, I had Mia.

She needed breakfast.

She needed clean clothes.

She needed stories before bed.

She needed someone to tell her that everything would eventually be okay, even when I wasn’t sure of that myself.

So I kept going.

One day at a time.

Harold Had Always Been Kind to Us

My employer, Harold, had known our family for years.

Our families had been acquainted for nearly a decade, and Mike and Harold had become close friends.

Before Mike became ill, the two of them would occasionally meet for coffee or talk about work and family.

After Mike died, Harold didn’t disappear.

He checked on us regularly.

Sometimes he brought groceries.

Other times he helped with something around the house.

He never made a big announcement about what he was doing.

He simply helped.

I appreciated it more than I could explain.

Harold had lost a friend too.

I knew that Mike’s death affected him.

That was one reason I felt comfortable continuing to work for him after everything happened.

He treated me with respect and never made me feel like my personal circumstances were a burden.

The Pool Party

One afternoon, Harold invited the entire staff to his home for a company celebration.

It was supposed to be a relaxed gathering.

Food.

Music.

A swimming pool.

People talking and laughing.

When I mentioned that I didn’t have anyone available to watch Mia, Harold immediately told me to bring her.

“Of course,” he said. “She’ll have fun.”

His home was much larger than anything Mia and I were used to.

The backyard was spacious, and the party had been arranged beautifully.

There were tables filled with food and drinks, comfortable seating areas, and people moving around the pool.

At first, I worried that bringing Mia had been a mistake.

She had endless energy.

She wanted to see everything.

She ran from one side of the yard to the other.

She asked questions constantly.

She wanted to know who everyone was and why certain things were where they were.

I apologized several times.

“She’s usually a little calmer,” I said.

Harold smiled.

“She’s four.”

Then he laughed.

“Let her enjoy herself.”

A few minutes later, Mia ra
