There Are No Maids in This House—Then My Mother-in-Law’s Secret Conversation Changed Everything

“There are no maids in this house.”

Those were the words I finally said to my mother-in-law after a week of increasingly uncomfortable moments.

She had criticized my cooking, moved things around our home without asking, questioned how I cared for her grown son, and repeatedly made comments that left me feeling like a guest in my own apartment.

Then, during dinner with several members of the family present, she openly made fun of the meal I had prepared.

I didn’t argue with her.

I didn’t raise my voice.

Instead, I quietly took her plate from the table and walked away.

Virginia was furious.

But only a few minutes later, her sister revealed something she had overheard Virginia saying during a private phone conversation.

And when I looked at my husband, Justin, I could tell that something had changed.

For the first time during his mother’s visit, he seemed to be looking at the situation from my perspective.

The Visit Begins

My name is Chloe, and I live with my husband, Justin, in Sacramento.

Justin’s parents, Virginia and Walter, live in Bakersfield.

When Virginia had several medical appointments scheduled in Sacramento over the course of several weeks, Justin suggested that his parents stay with us rather than spend money on a hotel.

“We have a guest room,” he said. “Why not let them stay here?”

It seemed like a reasonable idea.

“Of course they can stay,” I told him.

And I meant it.

I wanted the visit to go well.

I washed all the sheets in the guest room, cleared space in the closet, bought fresh towels, stocked the bathroom with supplies, and even baked an apple pie for their arrival.

I wanted Virginia and Walter to feel welcome.

Unfortunately, the visit became uncomfortable almost immediately.

The First Criticisms

Virginia began looking around the apartment the moment she arrived.

She stopped beside the living-room window and ran her fingers across the curtains.

“Did you pick these?”

“Yes,” I answered.

She looked at them for another moment.

“They make the room feel awfully dark. I would have chosen something brighter.”

I smiled politely.

“It took me a while to find something I liked.”

She nodded, but her expression suggested that she still disagreed.

A little later, I served the apple pie I had baked.

Virginia took one bite.

She paused.

“It’s pretty good.”

I thanked her.

Then came the rest.

“I think it needs more spice, though.”

Before I could respond, Walter reached over and took another piece.

“I think it’s excellent.”

Virginia said nothing.

For the moment, the subject was closed.

Before the first afternoon was over, I tried to make one thing clear.

“I want both of you to feel comfortable here,” I told them. “Use the kitchen, refrigerator, television, or anything else you need. I only ask that we respect each other’s routines. I work long hours, so during the week our meals are usually pretty simple.”
