The moment I walked into my mother-in-law Patricia’s dining room, I knew something was different.
There was an extra place setting at the table.
It was positioned directly beside my husband Ryan.
I paused for a moment, looking from the unfamiliar plate to Patricia, who was calmly pouring herself a glass of wine.
“Are we expecting someone?” I asked.
Patricia glanced at me and smiled.
“Just someone I haven’t seen in a very long time.”
There was something about the way she said it that made me uneasy.
Before I could ask another question, the doorbell rang.
Patricia immediately stood up.
“I’ll get it.”
She walked toward the front door with an excitement I hadn’t seen from her all evening.
A minute later, she returned with a woman standing beside her.
I recognized her almost immediately.
I had never met her in person, but I had seen her in old photographs.
Lauren.
Ryan’s former girlfriend.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Ryan looked genuinely surprised.
“Lauren?”
She gave him a small smile.
“Hi, Ryan.”
He turned toward his mother.
“Mom, what is she doing here?”
Patricia waved her hand dismissively.
“Oh, don’t make this uncomfortable. Lauren is practically family. I’ve known her for years.”
Then she pulled out the empty chair beside Ryan.
“Lauren, sweetheart, I saved you a seat.”
I looked at the chair.
Then at Ryan.
Then at Patricia.
It was obvious where she wanted Lauren to sit.
Ryan seemed uncomfortable, but he didn’t say anything.
Lauren took the seat.
At first, I tried to convince myself that Patricia had simply made an awkward social decision.
Maybe she genuinely wanted to reconnect with someone from the past.
Maybe she thought enough time had passed for everyone to be comfortable.
But within minutes, I realized this was not a casual invitation.
Lauren leaned toward Ryan.
“Do you still hate mushrooms?”
Ryan looked confused.
“Uh… yeah.”
“I knew it.”
She laughed.
“Some things never change.”
Patricia smiled as if she were watching an old family memory come back to life.
Dinner continued.
Unfortunately, so did the uncomfortable conversation.
Patricia began bringing up vacations Ryan and Lauren had taken together years ago.
“Remember that trip to Vermont?” she asked.
“You two had such a wonderful time.”
Ryan put down his fork.
“Mom.”
“What?” Patricia replied innocently. “We’re allowed to remember good memories.”
Lauren smiled.
“I still have a picture from that trip.”
Ryan’s expression changed.
“Why are you telling me that?”
The question was direct enough to silence the table.
I sat quietly, trying to understand what was happening.
It felt as though Patricia had deliberately created an opportunity for Ryan and Lauren to revisit their past.
And the strangest part was that Lauren didn’t seem uncomfortable.
She appeared to believe she had been invited for a reason.
At one point, Lauren excused herself from the table.
I waited a few moments before following her into the hallway.
“Lauren.”
She turned around.
“Yeah?”
“We need to talk.”
She nodded.
“Okay.”
I lowered my voice.
“Why are you here?”
Her expression changed.
“You really don’t know?”
“No.”
For the first time that evening, her confident smile disappeared.
“Patricia told me you wanted me here.”
I stared at her.
“Why would I invite my husband’s former girlfriend to a family dinner?”
Lauren looked genuinely confused.
“Wait.”
She took a step closer.
“She told me you knew Ryan wanted to leave the marriage.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“She said you were exhausted from trying to make things work. She told me the two of you had been unhappy for a long time.”
I shook my head.
“That isn’t true.”
Lauren continued.
“She said Ryan had been thinking about me again. She said he was unhappy but didn’t know how to tell you.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Did she tell you that Ryan said these things?”
Lauren nodded slowly.
“She said he told her that marrying you was a mistake.”
For a moment, I couldn’t find the right words.
Then Lauren pulled out her phone.
“I have the messages.”
She showed me the conversation.
Patricia had apparently been contacting Lauren for weeks.
She had told Lauren that Ryan was miserable.
She had suggested that Ryan still had feelings for her.
She had even implied that my marriage was already falling apart.
But there was one important detail Patricia apparently hadn’t considered.
Ryan hadn’t spoken to Lauren in four years.
I looked at her.
“You haven’t talked to him?”
Lauren shook her head.
“Not since we ended things.”
“Then why did you believe Patricia?”
Lauren sighed.
“Because she made it sound like Ryan was trying to reach me indirectly. She told me he was afraid to contact me because of you.”
I looked back toward the dining room.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Patricia wasn’t trying to organize a friendly dinner.
She had created an entirely different story for Lauren.
And apparently, she had expected that story to become reality.
I took a deep breath.
“I need to talk to her.”
Lauren gently touched my arm.
“Wait.”
I turned toward her.
“Why?”
She looked toward the dining room.
“Because if we confront her right now, she’ll probably deny everything.”
I considered that.
Lauren opened the message thread again.
“She thinks everything is going according to plan.”
Then Lauren smiled slightly.
“What if we let her think that?”
I raised an eyebrow.
“What do you mean?”
“Let’s teach her a lesson.”
I wasn’t sure what she had in mind.
But after seeing those messages, I knew one thing for certain.
I wasn’t going to allow someone else to manipulate my marriage without giving us an opportunity to respond.
So we returned to the dining room together.
Patricia looked pleased when she saw us.
“Everything okay?” she asked.
I smiled politely.
“Everything is fine.”
Ryan looked at me with a questioning expression.
I gave him a small nod.
He seemed
